History

Bermuda Aikikai was founded in 1985 by Collins Smith Sensei (7th dan, Shihan).  Smith Sensei spent over 40 years teaching and sharing Aikido as well as training a number of students who are now instructors in their own right. His legacy as a martial artist on the island and off is unparalleled.

While Smith Sensei continues to teach and remains an active part of the dojo, he is slowly handing over the daily running to his senior students with Jamie Constable Sensei taking on the day to day running of the dojo. Other scheduled instructors are Eugene O’Connor and Signe Constable.

Bermuda Aikikai is registered with the Aikikai Foundation in Tokyo, Japan. All instructors are certified by the United States Aikido Federation.

Statement of Intent

At Bermuda Aikikai we teach traditional Aikido. We recognise that Aikido can be many things to many people ranging from an engaging physical activity to a more integrated way of life.  Whatever the goal, with an open mind and consistent training, students will improve their physical and mental conditioning and acquire a powerful and effective system of self-defence.

Bermuda Aikikai has a zero tolerance for any form of harassment or bullying and works diligently to create a safe space for all members. We advocate mutual respect for everyone and do not support or tolerate any form of discrimination, exploitation, or harassment of anyone for any reason whether based on ethnicity, age, gender identity, sexual preference, religion, socioeconomic status. If you are a human being and you want to practice with sincerity, diligence, and kindness, you will be welcomed.

Please contact us if you would like to come watch a class or if you are a visitor and would like to come train. Everyone is welcome.
