Smith Sensei has been involved in martial arts for over 50 years and started Bermuda Aikikai 40+ years ago. In that time he has inspired hundreds of students and trained a new generation of Aikido instructors. In addition to building Bermuda Aikikai he also oversaw and guided several affiliated dojos in Canada and the UK. His legacy as a martial artist, a teacher, and a leader is unparalleled. 

James (Jamie) Constable, 6th dan, Shidoin, Dojo-cho

Jamie started Aikido under Smith Sensei in the early 90s and trained diligently at Bermuda Aikikai for over a decade. In 2006 he moved to Nova Scotia, Canada and opened Lunenburg Aikikai where he spent 18 years working to build the dojo and affiliated dojos in Maritime Canada. His focus is on community building, clear clean fundamentals, and the ongoing refinement of his weapons practice.

Jamie has recently returned to Bermuda to lead the team of next generation instructors dedicated to carrying forward and preserving Bermuda Aikikai’s legacy.

Eugene O’Connor, 6th dan, Shidoin

Eugene began his Aikido training as a university student in Montreal, Canada. Upon returning to Bermuda, he became a dedicated member of Bermuda Aikikai, training under Sensei Collins Smith for more than 30 years. Through his commitment and experience, Eugene grew to become one of the principal instructors at the dojo. Eugene’s background is in traditional practical Aikido with an emphasis on effective self-defence, adaptability, and functionality outside the dojo.

In addition to teaching adult classes Eugene also runs Bermuda Aikikai’s children’s program where he strives to teach young people not only how to defend themselves but how Aikido can improve their confidence, self-esteem, focus, coordination and self-discipline.

Signe Constable, 3rd dan, Fukoshidoin

Signe Constable started her aikido journey at age of 4 in the Bermuda Aikikai children’s program; she then spent many years training in Canada with her father, Jamie Constable. At the age of 18 Signe moved to Tokyo, Japan where she spent a year training at Hombu Dojo (the world Aikido headquarters) and where she earned her 1st degree black belt. 

In 2013 she returned to Bermuda to continue her training under the tutelage of Sensei Collins Smith. Since that time she has become an integral part of the teaching team at Bermuda Aikikai.

Signe teaches the Bermuda Aikikai’s fundamentals classes currently meeting on Mondays from 6.30 to 7.30 pm.
